The Waiting Room

Roger Goldby's film may not entirely avoid the sentimentality trap, but there are nice performances and good ideas in a thoughtful ensemble comedy set in suburban London. The opening scene shows what appears to be a happily married couple: Anna (Anne-Marie Duff) and George (Rupert Graves) scoot their two kids indoors while they nip up to the bedroom to catch up on some sex. Things turn out to be sadder and more complicated than they appear. Their lives are to mesh with those of Stephen (Ralf Little), a male nurse living with his girlfriend Fiona (Christine Bottomley), and Roger (Frank Finlay), the confused widower and resident of Stephen's care home. The ending is a little too cute, but Bottomley and Duff give strong performances as women burdened with unsatisfactory relationships.
